Ice Skating in Aspen: Indoor & Outdoor Winter Fun for the Whole Family
What could be more magical than gliding gracefully across the ice under a moonlit sky? Or do you want to show off your moves on one of Colorado's best indoor ice surfaces? Sounds terrific. So, how about giving ice skating in Aspen a try this year? It's a fun experience the entire family can enjoy!
Aspen Snowmass is one of the most popular winter destinations in the United States—for all sorts of winter activities. So, it might surprise you that we are sometimes asked, "Does Aspen have an ice skating rink?"
We sure do!
Whether you're looking for indoor rinks, outdoor rinks, full-sized arenas, or intimate smaller venues, we have them all. So whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, read on for the details.
Where Can You Skate in Aspen Snowmass?
As mentioned above, you have several choices for where to ice skate in Aspen, each with unique benefits and personality.
Outdoor Ice Skating in Aspen
Skating outdoors is a great way to enjoy the winter weather and get some exercise. And you get a great view of the snow-covered mountains.
Silver Circle Ice Rink (& Mini Golf)
The Silver Circle Ice Rink is located near the heart of downtown Aspen, next to CP Burger, and is an excellent place for "Family fun at the base of Aspen Mountain."
They also offer a summer miniature golf course and dining.
Outdoor Rink at the Aspen Rec Center
The recreation center (just a couple of miles up Maroon Creek Road, next to the Whoa Nellie Sledding Hill) has an outdoor ice rink open to the public from early November through late March. Skaters of all ages and levels are welcome.
Indoor Public Ice Skating in Aspen
The indoor facilities in the area offer lots of space, a classic energetic indoor rink vibe, and the option to skate in any weather.
Lewis Ice Arena at the Aspen Recreation Center
This full-size hockey arena also offers public skating sessions and figure skating. Skate rentals are also available for those who do not have a pair of skates. And for those new to skating or who want to improve their skating skills, group, and private lessons are also available.
The Aspen Ice Garden
The Aspen Ice Garden is the only indoor ice rink in town, making it easy to get to and allowing a fun, party atmosphere.
The Lewis Ice Arena is open for skating for the general public year-round, and you may rent the Aspen Ice Garden for parties and other group events.
Ice Skating at Snowmass Village
Not to be left out, Snowmass Village offers a couple of options.
The Collective
This is the entertainment hub of Snowmass Base Village. They offer free ice skating in the Snowmass Base Village Plaza from 1 to 9 pm in winter. So feel free to grab a snack and some hot chocolate at one of several nearby restaurants and eateries afterward.
Snowmass Village Ice Rink at the Snowmass Town Park
This outdoor rink offers free skating between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm during winter (closed occasionally for league nights, team rentals, and weather delays). They do not currently provide ice skate rentals.
Plan Your Aspen Ice Skating
No matter what type of skating you enjoy, staying safe and comfortable on the ice is essential. Be sure to dress warmly and wear proper footwear. You'll also have more fun if you choose a rink that is comfortable for you and goes at a time that allows you to have the most fun.
Picking the Right Rink for You
If you're new to the activity, choosing a suitable rink is essential. Here are some things to consider:
- The rink size: Some rinks are large, while others are more intimate. Consider how much space you need to feel comfortable skating. We suggest the NHL-size Lewis Ice Arena if you want lots of room. The Aspen Ice Garden is ideal for cozier groups.
- The surface type: Some rinks have a smooth, polished surface, while others have a rougher texture. If you're new to the sport, you'll want to start on a smoother consistency. Our pick is the Lewis Ice Arena for a smooth-as-glass experience. But if you want an authentic old-style skating experience, try the Snowmass Village Ice Rink or the outdoor skating rink at the Aspen Recreation Center.
- Do you own skates, or will you have to rent them? The indoor rinks rent skates, while the outdoor facilities do not. Call ahead, just to be sure.

The Best Times to Go Ice Skating in Aspen
If you're a beginner, the best skating times are early morning or late at night when the rink is less crowded. If you are experienced (or an extrovert), you might want to join the party during the busy prime times.
What's It Going to Cost Me?
Skating and skate rentals prices vary between rinks; free skating can be found in the Snowmass Base Village daily.
